Spring 2017: Reformation: Musical Traditions in Protestant Europe (marking the 500th anniversary of Luther’s 95 Theses)
The religious doctrines of the Protestant Reformation gave rise to the diverse landscape of devotional music in sixteenth-century Europe. Convivium will perform sacred works from several Protestant traditions: Lutheran German, Dutch Reformed, Calvinist, and Anglican, featuring music by Byrd, Tallis, Sweelinck, Goudimel, Praetorius, and many more.
Convivium Musicum is a Boston-based Renaissance choir of 20 singers, that has made United Parish their home for rehearsals and concerts.
Founded and run by its singers, Convivium Musicum is well-known for performances of Renaissance choral music that shimmer with precision, fine intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and lively attention to text. As they enter their fourth season with Music Director Michael Barrett, their programs continue to be informed by careful research and scholarship, and their performances devoted to bringing to life the complex and profound emotional texture of this repertoire. Early Music America has acclaimed their performance as “the kind of transforming experience that concert junkies are always seeking.”
